Why is clutch replacement necessary?

It's necessary to replace your clutch when it starts to wear because it's very dangerous to drive. This is because it's likely to break apart, so your vehicle will no longer be in use and the clutch is required to change gears, which furthermore helps you to slow down, break and emergency stop.

Worn clutches can also cause poor acceleration, which can be dangerous on slip roads when you need to build up your speed to catch up with the cars on the motorway.

Trying to drive without a clutch causes damage to your transmission and your gearbox, and may cause the flywheel to form heat cracks, meaning in the long run, it'll be costing you much more to repair.

There is a clutch safety switch on most vehicles, which prevents the driver from starting the engine with the clutch already engaged, usually located on the clutch pedal. This is useful if you have a habit of forgetting to go into neutral when parking your vehicle and helps prevent the clutch from wearing prematurely.

Signs your clutch is going

If you feel any of the symptoms below apply to your vehicle, please bring it down to us as soon as you can, and we'll find the damage and repair it for you.

The symptoms you may come across are:

  • When you press down on the pedal, it feels like it's sticking (hard to press down, and doesn't come back up as easily)
  • The pedal feels loose when you press down
  • The pedal continuously vibrates
  • If you can hear an abnormal noise when you press down on the pedal
  • The transmission makes a noise when the car is in neutral gear
  • You hear grinding sounds when shifting gears
  • You rev really hard, but you have ad acceleration
  • Difficulty switching between gears

What causes your clutch to fail?

There are lots of factors that could cause your clutch to fail, but it can mainly be to do with your driving habits. Your driving has a lot to do with the lifespan of your clutch.

For example, if you get into the routine of forgetting to use your clutch, you'll damage the transmission. Using your gearshift as a hand rest causes the clutch to wear more easily and quicker, as it puts pressure on the transmission.

If you are one to slam your foot on the clutch, it will become worn out more quickly than just one slight press down. On the other hand, if you keep gently tapping the clutch on a hill to avoid a hill start, the friction material is burning, so stay confident and stop, handbrake on and gear in neutral.

Continuous stopping and starting in heavy built-up areas, such as cities, or stopping at traffic lights, the school run, or going through a drive-thru can add strain onto the clutch. Instead of using the clutch to hold your position or control your speed, just brake and put your gear in neutral.

However, your clutch could simply wear over time. The linkage in the clutch could be bent or damaged, the pressure plate could become weak, oil due could contaminate the clutch assembly, the motor mounts could be broken, or the transmission oil could cause a leak.
