What is wheel alignment?
Wheel alignment is when the vehicle's suspension adjusts, therefore causing the connection between the vehicle and its wheels to become unsynced. These adjustments could cause the tyres to act differently on different road types and could cause them to be uncontrollable.
Different types of wheel alignment
There are a few different types of wheel alignments for cars, but we can assure you that we do thorough checks to make sure we diagnose the correct type. The different types are known as:
Thrust angle alignment
Thrust angle alignment is when the front to rear is checked to make sure the positioning of the wheels are squared to each other.
Front-end alignment
With front-end alignment, only the front tyres are checked over to make sure that they are positioned precisely in front of the rear tyres.
Four-wheel alignment
Four-wheel alignment is when the settings are adjusted on both the front and the rear of your car. For this, measurements of the distance between the front and rear tyres, the angle the tyre tilts, and the stability against the speed are taken.
Why is wheel alignment necessary?
When your wheel alignment becomes disconnected, you'll feel a vibration and your steering wheel may become shaky, which causes unsafe driving. Your tyres can also become worn, and you could need to replace them all if you don't get your wheels aligned. In bad weather, it could cause skidding, and it could cause collisions as your wheels may not go the way you steer.
What are the symptoms of your car being out of alignment?
If any of the symptoms listed below sound familiar to you and your car, then bring your car to us straight away and we'll get it sorted for you.
Wheel alignment causes very dangerous driving, especially in bad weather conditions, as it could cause skidding or an accident. So, even if your car doesn't have any of these symptoms, still feel free to come down, and we'll check for your own safety and peace of mind.
- If your tyres wear quickly
- Uneven tyres
- Vibration
- Uncontrollable steering wheel
- Noisy driving
- Tyres pulling to the left or the right when you're trying to go straight
How does wheel alignment go out?
If you accidentally hit or drive over something uneven in the road, such as a pothole or a curb, then this could cause your wheel alignment to go out.
Accidents whilst driving can also cause wheel alignment to go out, either by adjusting the front or rear wheels. This causes disconnection between them both, which furthermore causes unstable driving.
How are alignments done?
During the alignment process, the vehicles wheels and axles need to be adjusted so they move in the same direction. Various suspension angles that affect the tyres movements and positions must be adjusted, such as:
- Toe - the distance between the front and the rear tyres
- Thrust - front to rear positioning
- Camber - the angle the tyre is tilted away from vertical
- Caster - the connection between speed and stability
How often should I get a wheel alignment?
We highly recommend for wheel alignment to be done every two years, just for safety measures and prevention of accidents, and further damage, which will cost you more money in the long run.
When new tyres are installed, wheel alignment should always be done before taking your car on the road. We'll also give your car a full diagnostics test to make sure you won't have any further problems in the future.
